The 1990 Revolution in Nepal led to the establishment of a parliamentary monarchy in the country with various political parties competing for power. However one political party that called for a People's Republic was the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist). It lead a Maoist insurgency that would devolve into civil war by 1996.
