About Photo Safari in 4K UHD through the First Deep Field (NASA James Webb Space Telescope - JWST)

Now’s your chance to get a close look at the many of the colorful spiral galaxies in the Webb Telescope’s first released image of the first deep field. Thousands of small galaxies appear across this view in varying colors. Some are shades of orange, while others are white. Most appear as fuzzy ovals, but a few have distinct spiral arms. In front of the galaxies are several foreground stars. Most appear blue, and the bright stars have diffraction spikes, forming an eight-pointed star shape. Webb’s MIRI image offers a kaleidoscope of colors and highlights where the dust is – a major ingredient for star formation, and ultimately life itself. Blue galaxies contain stars, but very little dust. The red objects in this field are enshrouded in thick layers of dust. Green galaxies are populated with hydrocarbons and other chemical compounds. Researchers will be able to use data like these to understand how galaxies form, grow, and merge with each other, and in some cases why they stop forming stars altogether. There are also many thin, long, orange arcs caused by gravitational lensing. They follow invisible concentric circles that curve around the center of the image. These are images of background galaxies that have been stretched and distorted by the foreground galaxy cluster. This was the first image released from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).
